Can you guarantee I won't be afraid?

We can't guarantee zero fear, but we can dramatically increase your understanding and sense of control. Most clients report feeling significantly calmer after understanding what's actually happening during flight.

How do sessions work?

Our 15-minute and 1-hour sessions are live video calls (Zoom) where we walk through your specific concerns and upcoming flights. The 2-hour FlyCalm Experience is in-person at our NYC simulator location.

Is turbulence dangerous?

Accepted Answer

No. Turbulence is uncomfortable but not dangerous. Modern commercial aircraft are engineered to withstand forces far beyond anything encountered in normal flight. In over 60 years of jet aviation, turbulence has never caused a structural failure on a commercial airliner. Pilots use weather radar, reports from other aircraft (PIREPs), and air traffic control advisories to anticipate and avoid the roughest areas. When turbulence does occur, the plane is riding air currents -- much like a boat on waves. The seatbelt sign is a comfort measure, not an emergency signal.

What are the chances of a plane crash?

Extremely low. According to aviation safety data, the fatal accident rate for commercial aviation is approximately 0.07 per million flights. You are statistically far safer in a commercial aircraft than driving to the airport. The aviation industry has multiple redundant safety systems, rigorous pilot training with recurring simulator checks every 6-9 months, and continuous aircraft maintenance programs that make flying the safest form of transportation in the world.

Why does the plane make strange noises?

Every noise you hear on an aircraft has a normal, mechanical explanation. The thump after takeoff is the landing gear retracting into the fuselage. The whirring sound before landing is the flaps and slats extending to slow the aircraft. Dings from the cabin are crew communication signals. The change in engine sound during climb and descent is normal thrust adjustment. During your FlyCalm session, we walk through every sound phase by phase so nothing surprises you on your next flight.

What happens if an engine fails?

Commercial aircraft are designed to fly safely on one engine. Every airline pilot trains for engine failure scenarios in simulator sessions multiple times per year. Aircraft like the Boeing 777 can fly for over 5 hours on a single engine under ETOPS (Extended-range Twin-engine Operations Performance Standards) regulations. The remaining engine provides more than enough power to maintain altitude and reach the nearest suitable airport safely.

How much does a fear of flying consultation cost?

FlyCalm offers three session types: the SkyEase Pre-Flight Brief (15 minutes via Zoom, $50) for quick pre-flight reassurance, the SkyCalm Session (1 hour via Zoom, $200) for an in-depth consultation covering your specific concerns, and the FlyCalm Experience (2 hours in-person in NYC, $380) which includes hands-on time in a flight simulator with a pilot beside you. All sessions are conducted by ATP-certified airline pilots.

Can pilots see turbulence coming?

Yes, in most cases. Pilots use onboard weather radar to detect areas of convective activity (thunderstorms) that cause the most significant turbulence. They also receive pilot reports (PIREPs) from other aircraft ahead on the same route, and air traffic control provides real-time turbulence advisories. Clear-air turbulence (CAT) is harder to detect on radar, but forecasting models and jet stream analysis help pilots anticipate it. When turbulence is expected, pilots adjust altitude, speed, or route to minimize its impact.

Is it safe to fly during a thunderstorm?

Pilots never fly through thunderstorms. Using onboard weather radar and air traffic control guidance, pilots route around storm cells by a wide margin -- typically 20 nautical miles or more. If storms are too widespread to navigate around safely, flights are delayed on the ground until conditions improve. Modern aircraft are also designed to withstand lightning strikes, which occur more often than passengers realize and cause no damage to the aircraft. The fuselage acts as a Faraday cage, conducting electricity safely around the exterior.
