About FlyCalm
Our Story
FlyCalm was born in an airport terminal. Julian Alarcon, a Boeing 777 Captain with thousands of hours crossing oceans and continents, noticed something that changed his perspective on flying forever. Between flights, he would often sit in the gate area and watch passengers prepare to board. Some moved through the jet bridge with ease. Others gripped armrests in the waiting area, wiped their palms on their jeans, or stared out the window at the aircraft with visible dread.
One afternoon, a woman seated near the gate asked Julian -- still in uniform -- whether the wind outside was "too strong to fly." He spent ten minutes explaining how aircraft are designed and tested for conditions far beyond what passengers typically encounter, how pilots train for crosswinds repeatedly in simulators, and how the dispatch team had already evaluated the weather long before anyone arrived at the airport. By the time boarding began, she was visibly calmer. She thanked him and said something he never forgot: "No one has ever just explained it to me before."
That conversation -- and dozens like it over the years -- planted the seed for FlyCalm. Julian realized that many fearful flyers were not irrational. They were simply uninformed. The aviation industry does a remarkable job keeping passengers safe, but it does a poor job explaining how and why that safety exists. The gap between what pilots know and what passengers understand is enormous, and that gap is where fear lives.
FlyCalm was created to close that gap. Rather than offering generic advice or relaxation techniques alone, FlyCalm connects anxious travelers directly with active airline pilots who fly the same aircraft, the same routes, and face the same weather that passengers worry about. The result is a consultation grounded in real operational knowledge -- the kind of insight you would get if you could sit in the cockpit and ask every question on your mind.
Our Philosophy
Our founding principle is simple: knowledge conquers fear. Fear of flying almost always contains a knowledge deficit at its core. Passengers hear a strange noise during climb-out and assume something is wrong. They feel turbulence and imagine structural failure. They see clouds ahead and wonder why the pilots are not diverting. In every case, the fear stems not from actual danger but from a lack of context.
FlyCalm addresses that deficit directly. We believe that when you understand what is happening during every phase of flight -- why the engines change pitch after takeoff, what causes turbulence and why it is not a structural threat, how pilots navigate thunderstorms, and what those mechanical sounds actually mean -- the fear loses its power. You cannot be terrified of something you genuinely understand.
We use plain language, not jargon. Aviation is full of acronyms and technical shorthand that can make explanations feel inaccessible. Our pilots translate cockpit knowledge into everyday terms. We explain the same concepts we learned in training, but in a way that makes sense to someone who has never set foot in a simulator. Education, delivered clearly and patiently, is the most powerful tool we have.
Our Team
FlyCalm is staffed by four active airline pilots who fly for major U.S. carriers. Together, our team brings thousands of flight hours across three aircraft families -- the Boeing 777, Boeing 737, and Embraer ERJ-170/190 -- covering domestic and international routes across six continents.
Julian Alarcon -- Lead Instructor. Boeing 777 Captain holding an Airline Transport Pilot certificate, Certified Flight Instructor -- Instrument (CFII), Multi-Engine Instructor (MEI), and FAA Gold Seal designation. Julian flies long-haul international routes and brings deep experience in oceanic operations, high-altitude weather, and crew resource management. He founded FlyCalm after years of helping nervous passengers understand what happens on the other side of the cockpit door.
Peter Lynde -- Boeing 737 Captain. Peter operates one of the most widely flown narrow-body aircraft in the world, covering domestic and short-haul international routes daily. His experience with high- frequency operations -- multiple takeoffs and landings per day across varied airports and weather -- gives him a practical, grounded perspective that resonates with passengers who fly frequently for work or family.
Elijah Burgess -- ERJ-170/190 Pilot and flight school founder. Elijah combines airline flying with a background in primary flight instruction. He has trained dozens of student pilots from their first lesson through certification, which gives him an exceptional ability to break down complex aviation concepts into clear, step-by-step explanations. If you have ever wished someone would start from the very beginning and explain how an airplane actually flies, Elijah is your instructor.
Charles Canavan -- Boeing 737 Pilot. Charles brings a calm and methodical teaching style to his consultations. His focus on weather interpretation and air traffic control procedures helps passengers understand the layered safety systems that protect every commercial flight, from departure clearance to final approach.
What Makes Us Different
Several programs exist to help people manage their fear of flying. FlyCalm is different in four important ways.
- Active airline pilots, not retired. Our instructors fly the line today. They are not recalling what flying was like years ago -- they are describing what happened on their last trip. When you ask about turbulence over the Rockies or a go-around at LaGuardia, you are hearing from someone who experienced it this week.
- Real-time flight data tools. FlyCalm provides access to live FAA delay information, airport weather reports, and enroute weather data. Before your flight, you can see the same conditions your pilots are reviewing. This transparency removes the mystery and replaces it with understanding.
- Personalized flight briefings. Tell us your flight number and departure date, and we will generate a detailed briefing covering expected weather, typical turbulence areas along your route, and what to expect during each phase of flight. You board the aircraft already knowing what the crew knows.
- Simulator access in New York City. Our FlyCalm Experience session puts you in a full-motion flight simulator with an airline captain at your side. You will fly a takeoff, navigate through weather, and land the aircraft yourself. There is no better way to understand what the pilots are doing up front than to sit in their seat and do it yourself.
Our Services
- SkyEase Pre-Flight Brief -- 15-minute Zoom session ($50). A focused, one-on-one call designed for passengers with an upcoming flight. We review your specific route, expected conditions, and answer your most pressing questions before you head to the airport.
- SkyCalm Session -- 1-hour Zoom session ($200). A comprehensive consultation covering the fundamentals of flight, how aircraft systems work, what pilots do during every phase from pushback to parking, and a thorough discussion of whatever aspects of flying concern you most.
- FlyCalm Experience -- 2-hour in-person simulator session in NYC ($380). The most immersive option we offer. You will sit in a professional flight simulator alongside a captain, fly a complete flight profile, and experience firsthand what it feels like to control a commercial aircraft. This session transforms abstract fear into concrete understanding.
Important Disclaimer
FlyCalm provides educational aviation consultations only. Our services are not therapy, counseling, medical treatment, or mental health care. Our pilots are certified aviation professionals -- not licensed therapists, psychologists, or medical practitioners.
We teach you about flying. We explain how aircraft work, how pilots are trained, and what happens during every phase of flight. For many people, this knowledge is enough to significantly reduce their anxiety. However, if you are experiencing clinical anxiety, panic disorder, or any condition that requires professional mental health support, we encourage you to work with a licensed therapist in addition to -- or instead of -- our consultations. Education and therapy are complementary, and we are proud to be part of a broader support system for fearful flyers, but we are clear about what we are and what we are not.
